Raksha Bandhan is a beautiful celebration. It is a festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters in India, in the tradition of Sanatana Dharma, the Hindu tradition, and “Raksha Bandhan” means the “Bond of Protection”. It is where we promise each other that I will support you, I will protect you, I am there for you, to reassure and to strengthen that bond, that commitment. And if you see it is that insecurity that we have, the fear that we have in our life, that inhibits our goodness to people, that inhibits our creativity, our desire to do something good. So this festival is there to remove that fear, to strengthen that bond. where you say there is no need to be afraid, you are protected, I am there with you. So it empowers us to be more good to people, to be more true to our values, to be more true to our nature, and it is beautiful because it comes both ways. The sister also tells the brother I will also protect you And the brother says I am there for you, you tell me, I will provide you with anything you need. He says this to the sister.
So we see in India also that it does not necessarily mean that you can only tie it to your own brother. Anybody that you consider as dear and close to you as a brother or as a sister, you can tie a thread, what they call the ‘raakhi’, that ‘raksha’, the protection. So it is a beautiful practice and it has a very profound meaning behind it.
